Types of Glass Defects and Remedies for Bright

Types of Glass Defects and Remedies for Bright
It can be frustrating to invest resources and months of research to develop a product only to have the market respond sluggishly. Sadly, this usually happens when critical factors such as packaging are overlooked. That's why you need to understand the types of glass defects and how they can affect your brand if you use glass containers.
In this article, we will discuss the types of glass defects, as well as inspection and remedial measures for glass bottles. This way, glass defects will never affect your customer satisfaction or jeopardize your business possibilities.

Types of Glass Defects
Glass container defects can be divided into 6 categories according to the location of occurrence

Completion Defects

1. Seam under finish: a seam of about 5mm or greater than 5mm where the glass bottle finishing mold ring is connected to the blank mold.
2. Offset finish: The finish formed by not aligning vertically or horizontally. Offset finish may affect the seal and thus the quality of the product. It may also lead to fracture of the closure bridge.
3. Split finish: A crack in the top surface of a glass container that extends from the top down to the neck. If the surface of the glass bottle is cracked, it may leak in the user's hand.
4. Finish crease: A vertical or horizontal crease on the outside of the glass container. This defect may also be referred to as wrinkles or lap marks. Often, in glass containers used for landscaping, this aesthetic defect is not to be ignored.
5. Crizzled finish: A finish with many small surface cracks.
6. Exterior finish glass trim: A thin glass protruding edge (greater than 2 mm) around the finish. The glass trim of the external finish may cause a bad cork.
7. Shattered: A small portion of the bottle surface is broken or shattered.
8. Seeds: tiny air bubbles in the glass, which may also appear on the side walls and bottom.
9. Bubbles: A cavity in a glass container filled with air or gas. Bubbles are like seeds, but bigger.
10. Unfilled finish: Irregular finish; certain spaces that are unfilled, i.e., missing pieces of glass. These spaces can interfere with vacuum filling, which can lead to leaks and promote deterioration of the contents.
11. Stone: Small pieces of unmelted glass trapped in the finished glass.

Neck Defects

1. Bent neck: a bottle neck that slopes to one side. Glass bottles with curved necks are often difficult to seal. In addition, they may interfere with the customer's perception of the contents.
2. Choked neck: excess glass will block the inner hole of the glass bottle. A glass bottle with a choked neck is as good as useless, as it is likely to break during the filling process.
3. Dirty neck: Glass containers with dirty or scaly appearance at the neck. A container with a dirty defective neck may reduce the visual appeal of your product. It may also misrepresent your brand.

Shoulder Defects

1. Shoulder check: A surface crack that does not run the entire thickness of the bottle, usually straight or wavy. Shoulder inspection increases the risk of bottle breakage after filling.
2. Recessed shoulder: An unnecessary depression around the shoulder. A concave shoulder may reduce the filling capacity of the affected container. It also gives the container a poor overall appearance - it's not the product you want.

Sidewall and Body Defects

1.Bird swing or bird cage: A thin string of glass extending across the inside of the bottle or container.
2.Internal Blisters: Blisters within the glass walls.
3.Stuck ware: A rough, sharp, or cutting edge on the body of a glass container. Stuck ware may damage secondary parking and cause injury to your workers.
4.Burrs: Similar to stuck ware but found along the mold seams.
5.Dirty ware: Similar to a dirty neck. Dirt or carbon deposits are usually to blame.
6.Deformation: Glass container has a shape anomaly. A deformed container may affect labeling and secondary packaging. Plus, a deformed bottle is bad for brand integrity.

Bottom and Bottom Defects

1. Chain marks: printed on the bottom of the bottle, usually due to contact with the conveyor belt immediately after manufacture.
2. Deformed bottom: The bottom of the bottle is deformed, such as the center is not concave but convex. A glass container with a deformed bottom will be unstable, i.e. it will not stand upright.

Other Defects

Other defects in glass containers include cords, internal markings, uneven distribution and vessel distortion.
A variety of defects may occur in the manufacturing process of glass and glass materials.

Glass Bottle Inspection and Remedial Measures
If you're in the packaging industry, you're probably familiar with Empty Bottle Inspection.
Empty Bottle Inspectors (EBI) have been in operation for about 30 years, and EBI performs a thorough inspection of empty bottles. They evaluate glass wall thickness, defects and foreign inclusions in the glass - a common concern for manufacturers.
